Hello!
Let this be your simple reminder that good things are always happening. Even when, and maybe especially when, things take a turn or go awry, it’s helpful to look for the good. It’s there. I promise.
To be clear, I am not suggesting that you deny what you’re feeling, and I’m not urging you to push those feelings away. Rather, I’m asking you to remember that there are things to be grateful for along with the things that are troubling you. If you can glimpse a more open perspective, you can avoid getting dragged down by things not going your way. It’s not easy, because we are human, and sometimes our minds take us on unpleasant little journeys that we might not have intended to go on, but here we are.
A gratitude practice might sound trite, but we know from research that taking a moment (or more) each day to recall the good in our lives helps us reduce stress, get better sleep, and stay healthier. When we embark on any wellness project whether it’s meditation or yoga or something else, it’s also helpful to remember that we are doing it to invest in the person we will be tomorrow, not to dwell on any perceived weakness we hold today.
We’ve all been there — our thoughts drag us somewhere we don’t want to be, maybe into some negative state of anger, frustration, rumination, boredom, or jealousy. Noticing where you are is the first step towards moving away from that state. From there, if you can open up, however briefly, to other, more positive things also happening in the present moment, you will be doing yourself a huge service. Finding things to be grateful for and expressing gratitude is a great place to start.
I often work with groups of people who have a shared concern. A woman from one such group shared with me that sometimes she isn’t physically up to coming to class. On those days she thinks of her friends who are attending and it helps her feel better to know that they are keeping their community going. She is grateful for other people who can show up. How awesome is that?
This week let’s practice paying attention to the good things happening for us. This week’s ten-minute guided audio meditation will you get started.
I am grateful for your presence here. If you have a friend who might want to join us, please share this post via the button below. Thank you, as always, for your support.
