Happy New Year!
There is an owl who lives in the tree outside my bedroom window. As I get into bed most nights I can hear him hooting. If he’s not there, I wonder about him. Is he out hunting? Is he okay? Last night, his vocal presence jogged a memory.
Years ago, I stayed in the loveliest riad in the middle of Marrakech. It had gorgeous courtyards with fountains, trees, a tortoise, and so many birds. One of my lasting memories of that trip will always be the sounds of North Africa, including the birds who lived in those courtyards.
The guests lucky enough to be staying close to one of the treed courtyards would wake to birdsong. To me, it was absolutely magical. But as I sat outside one morning sipping mint tea, I overheard another guest asking management what could be done about the “noisy birds” who woke him up again. Wow, was he mad.
It’s funny, isn’t it, how something so special to one person can be so abrasive to another?
As we begin this new year, I urge you to consider what fills you up. What do you want more of in your life? What could you let go of to support your vision of how you want your life to be?
It’s different for different people.
I’m not talking about a resolution. It’s more of a North Star. Where do you want to go? What do you want your life to look like? Use your imagination. Try to picture it as if it already exists. When you give yourself some guidance you can arrange the details of your life to support your vision.
Think about it for a few minutes, please, and then try out this intention-setting meditation. Once you know the technique, you can, and should, set an intention whenever it seems appropriate.
So, what do you want more of in your life?
