With the way things are going in the world today, it has become a luxury to be able to think clearly, sleep well, move at your own pace, and enjoy a peaceful and quiet lifestyle.
The news and people’s opinions on it come at us quickly. The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and usually not for the better. By design, our national conversation is directed in a way that it bounces around like a beachball, making it hard to have a meaningful discourse. Distraction and uncertainty are the norms. It presents us with a heightened challenge for what we are trying to do here at Inner Space Studio: enjoy a thoughtful lifestyle.
The daily news casts a long shadow on our nights, and when things move so quickly, sleep can become elusive, as can our daily peace and quiet. As August begins, we are witnessing wars, cruelty, starvation, a warming planet with extreme and unusual weather events, the silencing of science, and the policing of the arts. A powerless feeling can result, and sometimes you need a moment (or more) to regroup.
As I write this from the suburbs, I am distracted by a cacophony of construction sounds and the constant buzz of noisy lawn care equipment. My neighbors and I are living under an air quality alert (from Canadian wildfire smoke) that has lingered on and off for most of the summer. The external world doesn’t feel peaceful at all. The noisier it gets, the more we want to escape it, but more often than not, that must be accomplished by tuning into a more peaceful state that we manufacture internally.
Meditation is made for moments like these, but for some people, meditation is still a bit mysterious, and for others, another thing to check off their to-do list. I was reminded of a website this week that I wanted to share with you. It’s called myNoise.net, and it is just what we need these days. They describe themselves as “a world of immersive and customizable soundscapes that can enhance focus, relaxation, and sleep.” You can customize a unique environment by fine-tuning a range of noise generators, nature sounds (recorded in locations all over the world), and ambient sounds.
The link below will take you to the main page where you can choose your adventure. The sounds are organized by category, and even include specialty recommendations like tinnitus relief and pet comfort. Begin with whatever draws you in and take it from there. If you prefer a specific recommendation, consider Irish Coast. There is even a page with photos of the sound sampling on location. I could listen all day.
Other fan favorites can be found by clicking on the little stacked hamburger icon in the top left corner of the site. You can spend hours here, traveling through the world through sound and your imagination. I have been playing recordings from this website in the background while I work, and I can assure you that it has vastly improved my day.
I hope you enjoy this sound adventure as much as I do. I would be honored if you sent me your favorites. Or link them in the comments below. Have fun!
