Hi there,
We had a request this week. A reader asked how she could feel better when the world feels so unstable these days.
Our questioner is right. There is a lot of destruction and uncertainty in the world these days. Every time I look at the news, something, someone, or somewhere is under attack. It’s not easy to feel settled and stable when so much is being torn down, and so much change is afoot.
What helps me most when things feel uncertain is to have some stability and routine in my life. Familiarity and consistency are key.
A daily meditation practice.
A consistent workout routine.
Catching up with an old friend.
Listening to a playlist of your favorite songs.
Stopping in at your favorite coffee shop.
Walking a familiar route after dinner.
Rewatching your favorite show.
Rereading your favorite book.
Drinking out of your favorite coffee mug.
Doing a daily crossword puzzle.
Making your favorite recipe.
You get the idea. Novel experiences are great and fun, but familiarity evokes comfort, and that is what we all crave in times of uncertainty. Stay in the healthy grooves that you have created. Consistency is your friend.
Rereading and rewatching might give you pause, but revisiting things that you can predict is a good option when the last thing you need is nightmares from a scary movie or more images of simulated violence.
As for meditation, this is the one I turn to when I need a reset. It helps me feel a little more refreshed when I am tired or overwhelmed. Doing this lying down is the way to go, in my opinion. If you fall asleep, so be it. If you get lost in thought, it’s okay; just come back to the meditation when you are ready. If you need to sit or walk around while you do this, that’s okay, too.
