Hi there. How’s it going?

For ages, people have been using specialized breathing techniques to achieve different outcomes. Conscious breathing patterns can increase energy and mental clarity. They can also help us relax and release tension. Our breath is our essential life force and can be patterned to influence how we feel and experience life.

It is helpful to have ways to cope when things feel overwhelming, so let’s look at a conscious breathing pattern to help us feel calmer in a stressful moment.

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is simple, effective, and only involves a small effort. There’s a bit more to it, but the basic process goes as follows:

  • Inhale through your nose for four counts.

  • Hold your breath for seven counts.

  • Exhale through your mouth for eight counts.

You can use this breathing pattern in stressful moments to help you feel less anxious or practice it a couple of times a day when you’re feeling okay. There is some evidence that doing so will help you feel more at ease and less reactive overall.

Try it for four cycles of breath. It will take less than five minutes.

A more detailed guided audio form of the 4-7-8 breathing technique instruction is below. I hope you find time to give it a try. Please let me know if it helps.
