Hi there.
It would be hard to miss the news that Taylor Swift released new music on Friday.
People are posting lists of their favorite songs on social media. A song that keeps popping up is “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”
It’s about outwardly projecting “it’s my birthday” glittery, sparkling-level energy when you have a broken heart.
Can you relate?
The pervasive need to be constantly connected to loved ones and our livelihoods, the pressure to be responsive and to look good doing it — a.k.a. the new norm, can cause heightened stress levels and burnout, and compromise our well-being.
This constant overstimulation desensitizes us to what is important. We risk merely going through the motions of daily life, exhausting ourselves, and as a result, feeling less connection and less joy.
Taking even a moment to check in with yourself before stepping into something can be helpful. Breathing consciously to extend your exhales will help you relax. Noticing how you feel, and checking for any tension or sensation in your mind and body, will provide self-awareness and a greater likelihood that you will enter interactions from a more grounded and balanced state. Don’t judge—just notice, and proceed with that information to better match your effort with your priorities.
It also really, really helps to have a practice that grounds you—something that you can do to decompress and offset the overstimulating nature of modern life. When you practice mindfulness consistently, it is much easier to call upon it when you need it.
