Hello there. How was your week?
The future is always uncertain, but lately it feels even less so. On top of that, divisiveness is rampant. A glance at the comments section of most any social media post will reveal that people are becoming less concerned about how their words and actions affect others. It’s only natural that we might feel disoriented or overwhelmed. During difficult times, we must find ways to balance staying engaged with the intensity of current events and taking care of ourselves.
Appreciating simple experiences can bring a wealth of joy.
Have you seen the livestream footage from the bald eagle nest in the San Bernardino Mountains? You might recall that the bald eagle parents, Jackie and Shadow, had eggs that failed to hatch a few years ago, but as of this week there are three eaglets!
Recently, I’ve been keeping the livestream running in an open tab while I work on my laptop. The nature sounds of the eagles in their nest are soothing.
If you like nature, this live camera provides a good connection to it, but there are joyful happenings closer to home. The cardinal family in your yard. The new bloom on your houseplant. The familiarity of your favorite walk. The sun on your face. The warmth on your hands when you hold your favorite coffee mug. Your favorite article of clothing.
Interpersonal interactions can also bring joy. This morning, someone complimented a piece of jewelry I was wearing, which sparked a conversation that brightened my day. I celebrated a birthday earlier this week, and I particularly treasured the heartfelt, personalized messages I received from friends both near and far. In a world where we can easily cut and paste or receive help from AI, a personal note feels especially meaningful.
Small joys are always present. Don’t forget to look, pause, and experience them fully. When the world feels like too much, look for the good to strike a nourishing balance.
There is a meditation for everyone this week. I hope you find it helpful as you go about your day.
