People have been using specialized breathing techniques for thousands of years to achieve different outcomes. It’s helpful to have ways to cope when things start to feel overwhelming, so let’s look at a conscious breathing pattern to help with that.
The 4-7-8 breathing technique is simple, effective, and only involves a small effort. There’s a bit more to it, but the basic process goes as follows:
Inhale through your nose for four counts.
Hold your breath for seven counts.
Exhale through your mouth for eight counts.
You can use this breathing pattern in stressful moments to help you feel less anxious, or you can practice it twice a day when you’re feeling okay. There is some evidence that doing so will help you feel calmer overall.
It’s only four cycles of breath - less than five minutes.
